OVERVIEW

The 2022.0.0 Update is the fifth larger iterative version of AR 3S. Its primary focus are Object Import, UI/UX as well as Interaction.

NEW – Files - The position of menus can now be stored in AR 3S Spaces and once the space is loaded the menus are displayed in relative position together with the object data

NEW – Files - Importing process for Object loading can be interrupted using the Cancel functionality inside the Files menu

NEW – Loading Cube - The option to mirror geometries during Object import (available in AR 3S User Preferences for importers) is now dynamically accessible in the Loading Cube

NEW – Loading Cube - Before confirming the Object import, using the functionalities Mirror XMirror Y and Mirror Z, objects can be adjusted to match the expected orientation

NEW – Loading Cube - All mirror options can be also combined to flip objects along multiple axis at the same time

NEW – Space Origin/Manual Alignment - Space Origin gizmo has been substituted with a new 3D shape to differentiate it from the Interaction-Move gizmo

NEW – Space Origin/Manual Alignment - Left-Hand Quick-Tools Menu has been equipped with a new icon to activate the Space Manual Alignment functionality

NEW – Space Origin/Manual Alignment - Using a simple “grab” action, it is possible to move the whole Space Origin gizmo in any space position and two rotation handles allow for adjustments in X and Z directions

NEW – Hierarchy - Objects loaded in AR 3S are now organized inside the Hierarchy Menu with object tabs

NEW – Hierarchy - For each loaded object a new tab is created, the “active” object has its respective tab colored in blue

NEW – Hierarchy - When more objects than the tab bar space can fit are loaded, browsing arrows ( left and right) are displayed to help navigating through all existing tabs

NEW – Hierarchy - AR 3S Space files are now visualized with a dedicated tab in orange

NEW – Hierarchy - All objects loaded and saved into an AR 3S Space are now listed within a single Assembly with a unique tab to simplify the access and the management of the content

NEW – Hierarchy - Individual objects loaded as separate files can be merged into one single Space tab using the new functionality Merge Into Space

NEW – Hierarchy - Users can select their preferred object tab and by clicking on the Merge Into Space icon can create a new Space tab or merge the selected object into an already existing Space tab

NEW – Tools - The Measurement Menu has been renamed to Tools Menu and its functionality has been reworked

NEW – Tools - The Tools Menu is grouping the Measurement tools with all previously existing tools accessible through the Interaction Menu, plus some new functionalities

NEW – Tools - Options related to the different tools are dynamically displayed depending on the activated functionality

NEW – Tools - Simulated Hand Poses and positions can be captured and stored in AR 3S Spaces for review and evaluation purposes

NEW – Tools - Pose Capture can be triggered with default settings (3 seconds countdown and both simulated hands captured) or can be customized adjusting Countdown duration and Hand to capture (both, left or right)

NEW – Tools - Captured poses are listed in the Tools menu and can be deleted if no longer needed

NEW – Tools - Hand Poses can be saved in AR 3S Space files to be displayed in a further session after the Space file has been reloaded

NEW – Tools - A visualization system for detecting the intersection between holograms can be activated using the new Collision Detection functionality inside the Tools Menu

NEW – Tools - The Hand Outline feature allows to visualize the outline of the user's hands as soon as they start to intersect with an object or are behind it

NEW – Tools - Hand Intersection applies a “heat map” to the virtual hands highlight with red color the closest point of intersection

NEW – Tools - PDF files can be loaded and visualized using the integrated Multimedia player available inside the Tools menu

NEW – Tools - In AR 3S, PDF files stored inside the HoloLens 2 folder “3D Objects” can be opened, browsed and consumed like on a regular desktop application

NEW – Tools - Multiple files can be loaded and played at the same time into different reading windows and, as for virtual object inside AR 3S, they can be virtually positioned everywhere in space and up-scaled to any necessary size

NEW – Tools - Video files (MP4) can be played using the integrated Multimedia player available inside the Tools menu

NEW – Tools - In AR 3S, video files stored inside HoloLens 2 folders like “3D Objects”, “Pictures\Camera Roll” and “Videos” can be loaded and played

NEW – Tools - Multiple files can be loaded and played at the same time (the performance could be affected in AR 3S due to limited hardware capabilities of Microsoft's HoloLens 2, for this specific scenario it is recommended to use AR 3S Pro in this case)

NEW – UI/UX - The Interaction Menu has been reworked as well as simplified and does contain only Selection and Manipulation modes from now on

NEW – UI/UX - Select All and Deselect All have been grouped together with the Undo and Redo buttons in the top button bar

NEW – UI/UX - Selection Mode and Manipulation Mode are accessible in a unified user interface to allow users to trigger the different modes with a one-click approach

NEW – UI/UX - Options related to the different Interaction modes are dynamically displayed depending on the activated functionality

IMPROVED – Cross Section - Using Space Origin it is possible to align Cube and Plane Cross Section objects to position the clipping objects in an improved manner

IMPROVED – Cross Section - Cube Section clipping can be locked to Free Mode to have full manual control over movement and rotation as well as for allowing aligning to the World Space in order to constrain movement to Space Axis

IMPROVED – Cross Section - Plane Section clipping can be locked to Free Mode or to different axis combinations (X-Y, X-Z, Y-Z) in order to have full manual control over movement and rotation

IMPROVED – Exploded View - To better control Exploded View a new set of options has been added to constrain the direction into the scene

IMPROVED – Exploded View - Once X, Y and Z Axis have been activated it is possible to restrain the movement to "exploded" parts only using positive or negative values instead of relying on the position of the center of the object

IMPROVED  Interaction - By default, in AR 3S, the Manipulation mode Grab is activating an Object Box for the selected part to help users in detecting the area responding to the Grab gesture

IMPROVED – Interaction - Improved option Display Object Box allows experienced users to permanently hide the Object Box of the selected part to provide a more natural feeling while working with the Grab mode

FIXES

As part of our mission we continuously aim to improving AR 3S. And bugs are no exceptions. Based on feedback from users, partners and internal developers the following bugs have been squashed.

FIXED – Menus cannot be properly detached from the Main Menu in some cases after being opened

FIXED – FBX importer is misplacing some geometries for certain files

FIXED – Objects still inside Loading Cube can be manipulated using Hierarchy Menu selection system

FIXED Options Menu inside User Preferences saves options occasionally even when the user choose to not save changes while closing the menu

FIXED Hierarchy Menu displays an error message when opening and closing the menu while loading an additional object

FIXED – Left-Hand Quick-Tools Menu icons are visualized partly in front and party behind the same object or application menu

FIXED Auto-Share and Auto-Receive options inside Files Menu can be activated/deactivated also by touching their respective description text

FIXED  Exploded View feature becomes unresponsive after deleting an object in exploded mode status

FIXED – Users did not receive a warning when trying to save an AR 3S Space file having objects inside the Loading Cube

FIXED – Users did not receive a warning when creating a new AR 3S Space right after having loaded a previously saved one

FIXED – QR Code folder and icon were not removed from "3D Objects" after a Multi-User session was completed or canceled

KNOWN ISSUES

Below you will find a list of known issues. These issues are defined as bugs, or at times missing features, that is known to the development team and are being actively investigated or developed.

  • Collision Detection creates false positive results depending on point of view – The visualization of intersections between virtual hands and the holograms of objects could create some false positive depending on the perspective of the point of view and, occasionally, when the virtual hands are just behind the hologram of the object but not “touching” it. The current status of the functionality is for review purpose only. It is not supposed to be considered accurate for physical collision detection.
  • Save position in space of opened Application menus for HL3D files (AR 3S Space) – AR 3S Spaces saved as HL3D files storing the positioning of opened menus can only be properly realigned via the Realign Origin feature. During meetings in Local Network mode or Cloud mode users receiving an AR 3S Space that includes opened menus (shared by the Host of the meeting) will be presented with the same menu setup that was stored inside the file. Once the loading is completed, the Guest user will be able to freely rearrange the menu setup.
  • Hand Pose Captures are not synchronized between users in Multi-User sessions – Saving AR 3S Space files storing captured Hand Poses and sharing them during Multi-User sessions allows for displaying Hand Poses saved in the Space file. Newly captured poses or deleted poses, however, are not synchronized between the users attending the session.
